Are you prepared ?
Disaster can strike at any time. Without warning, you could lose the things that mean most to you. That is why it’s important to protect you and your family with homeowners insurance. Winter storms are and were responsible for more insurance industry payouts than ,lets say, terrorism ($23.6 billion), geologic mishaps ($17.6 billion) and the crazy wind, hail and floods ($11.1 billion) and fires ($8 billion) that we receive these days.
At best a power outage is a small inconvenience that gives the family some quality time to eat by candlelight and the kids an opportunity to discover a world away from the television and internet life. Take advantage of those times and have a peace of mind knowing you have prepared your home with insurance and the possible things that could go wrong during a wintry storm.
Tips for homeowners: With the days getting darker, it’s worth keeping a few safety tips in mind to ensure that nothing else happens to darken your day, if you are away from your home for a few days or leave your home unoccupied for more than a day.
Average homeowners and business insurance policies cover a wide varity of winter-related disasters like burst pipes, ice damages, high wind damage, leaking roofs, and buildings that will collapse caused by the weight of ice or snow. Coverage for sewers and drains that tend to back up. Flood damage is excluded from most average policies.
To prevent damage from the ice and snow and from future storm related events.
Keep your home at a comfortable warm level. The temperature in the home should be set at least 65 or 68 degrees to prevent the pipes from freezing and bursting.
Mostly watch for accumulation of snow on the leeward and (downwind) side of a higher-level of your roof, where blowing snow is expected to accumulate . For a safe removal that won't damage your roof, consult an experienced roofing contractor for their opinion.
"Ice damage" can happen when gutters become frozen, damaging ceilings as melting ice spreads under roof shingles. Make it a routine job to clean gutters of those well expected leaves and debris to prevent this condition.
Remove any small twigs that become heavy with snow and ice hanging from gutters and clear the walk areas to prevent any human damages.
As the snow begins to melts, water can back-up sewers and drains resulting in flooding and costly repairs. Notify the Local community officials if street drains are clogged with the fall foliage and trash.
Always have plenty of fuel in your automobiles in case of a power outage, and plenty of firewood or propane on reserve if your power goes out in your home.
Tips for insurance claims:
Heres some advice to speed the insurance claims settlement.
Call your insurance agent or companies 1-800 number. Be prepared to give your agent or their representative a description of your damage. Your agent will report and gather your information on the loss immediately to your insurance provider or to an adjuster who will contact you for a time to inspect the damage. Give your INSURANCE agent a phone number where you may be reached.
Take clear photos of your damaged property or personal items. This will help in your claims process and will assist the adjuster in his assessment.
Having a detailed inventory of all damaged personal property will be helpful and makes the adjusters job better to serve you. Two copies is a good rule of thumb - one for yourself and one for the adjuster. Your list should be as accurate as possible, description of the items are key. Date of purchases or ages of items, estimated replacement cost and time spent preparing and repairing.
Collect any canceled checks you may have occured over your duration of buying, invoices, receipts are neccessary and wonderful to have. All these items we dont much think about will have its rewards , cause it will help the adjuster( again have an easier job) in determining the value of your damage items.
Make whatever short term repairs you can. Cover broken glass, roofs and interior damage to prevent further destruction. Remember save receipts for supplies and materials you bought. Most good insurance company will reimburse you for expenses of a reasonable amount in making short term repairs.
Secure a detailed summary or estimates for your repairs to your property and give it to your adjuster. The estimate should contain the proposed repairs, repair costs and replacement prices.
Priority will be given to the most serious losses. It will take time to process the many damage claims being filed ( EVEN WITH LARGE AMOUNT OF ADJUSTERS)SO BEWARE! If your home has been seriously damaged, in some cases agent will do everything he can to assure you are at high priority.
